In 2026 an employee who earned €3,000 a month gets an earnings-related unemployment allowance (ansiosidonnainen päiväraha) of €80.85 a day, about €1,738 a month before tax. It has a basic part of €37.21 a day plus an earnings part of 45 % of the difference between your daily wage and the basic part; above the break point of €3,534.95 a month, the earnings part drops to 20 %. The daily wage is your salary minus 3.83 %, divided by 21.5. The allowance steps down to 80 % after 40 paid days and to 75 % after 170, but never below the basic part. There is a 7-day waiting period, and it is paid for 5 days a week. You must be a member of an unemployment fund (työttömyyskassa) and meet the employment condition; otherwise Kela pays the general support (yleistuki). The calculator follows the method of TYJ, the unemployment funds’ joint body, and matches its 2026 table to the euro.

The calculator against TYJ’s 2026 table

The calculator follows TYJ’s published method. Below, its result sits next to TYJ’s 2026 allowance table, with the stepped-down monthly amounts. On a low salary the 90% cap on the daily wage limits the allowance, and the stepped amounts bottom out at the basic part, €800.02.

The formula step by step

  1. Daily wage: gross pay over the qualifying months, excluding holiday bonus and holiday compensation, minus 3.83%, divided by 21.5 working days per month. On €3,000 that is €134.19.
  2. Basic part: €37.21 a day for everyone.
  3. Earnings part: 45% of the daily wage above the basic part; 20% on pay above the €3,534.95 monthly break point.
  4. Cap: at most 90% of the daily wage, but never less than the basic part.
  5. Monthly figure: daily allowance × 21.5.

The break point is why high earners see a modest allowance: on €5,000 the full allowance is €2,285 a month, less than half the salary. The formula has no child increases.

Who qualifies

  • Fund membership: the allowance is paid by your unemployment fund to its members. Membership fees are deductible in your taxation.
  • Employment condition (työssäoloehto): 12 months of work, where a month counts in full with at least €930 of pay and as a half month with €465. See the employment condition page.
  • Waiting period: 7 unpaid days at the start.
  • Duration: 300, 400 or 500 days; covered on duration and step-down.

The tool does not model the adjusted allowance for part-time work or other benefits. Your fund calculates the exact amount from Incomes Register wage data. The rules are in the Unemployment Security Act and the step-down on TYJ’s step-down page. Without a fund you get yleistuki. Pension keeps accruing while you receive the allowance; see the pension calculator.

Frequently asked questions

How much unemployment benefit do I get in Finland on a €3,000 salary?

The full allowance is €80.85 a day, about €1,738 a month gross. After 40 paid days it falls to about €1,391 and after 170 to €1,304 a month. At first about €1,304 remains after 25% withholding. Your fund uses the average gross pay over the qualifying months, without holiday bonus.

When does the Finnish earnings-related allowance step down?

After 40 paid days it is 80 % of the original amount, and after 170 days 75 %. With five paid days a week that is roughly two and eight months in. The basic part of €37.21 is never reduced. On a €3,000 salary the step-downs eventually cost about €435 a month.

How long is earnings-related unemployment allowance paid?

Up to 300 days if you have worked no more than 3 years since age 17, and 400 days with a longer history. It is 500 days if you met the employment condition at 58 or older and have the recent work history the law requires. The calculator picks the duration from the work history and age you enter.

What tax rate applies to the earnings-related allowance?

The allowance is taxable. If you give your fund the tax card made for wages, it withholds at least 25 %, even when your salary rate is lower. The calculator works out the benefit tax rate on a full year of allowance and applies at least that floor: 25% on the allowance from a €3,000 salary. A separate tax card for benefits can give a more accurate rate.

What do I get if I am not a member of an unemployment fund?

Kela’s general support (yleistuki), which replaced the basic unemployment allowance and labour market subsidy from 1 May 2026. It is €37.21 a day, about €800.02 a month, the same as the basic part. On a €3,000 salary, a fund member would get roughly €938 a month more before step-downs.
