Living in Vantaa, a €3,500 monthly salary nets about €2,689 a month in 2026, without church tax or holiday bonus, with a withholding rate of 15.0 % on the tax card (verokortti). Vantaa’s municipal tax of 6.40 % is 1.10 percentage points above Helsinki’s 5.30 %, and anyone choosing between an apartment on either side of the city border will want to know what that gap really costs. In euros it comes to about €289 a year at €2,500 a month, €412 at €3,500 and €592 at €5,000. Nationally Vantaa is still a low-tax city: only 5 of the 292 mainland municipalities charge less. Vantaa against Helsinki, in euros
A 1.10-point gap in municipal tax sounds trivial, yet it widens as salary rises because the basic deduction and the earned income credit fade out. The table shows how much more tax a Vantaa resident pays per year than a Helsinki resident on the same salary, and the tax card rate in each city.
| Monthly salary | Tax card, Vantaa | Tax card, Helsinki | Extra tax in Vantaa / year |
|---|---|---|---|
| €2,500 | 9.0 % | 8.0 % | €289 |
| €3,500 | 15.0 % | 14.0 % | €412 |
| €5,000 | 22.5 % | 21.5 % | €592 |
Withholding rates move in half-point steps because Vero rounds them up. Your final tax is calculated to the cent in the annual assessment, so anything withheld in excess comes back as a refund.
