In 2026 Kela’s parental allowance (vanhempainraha) is 70 % of your annual income divided by 300, when that income, after a deduction for insurance contributions, is between €13,712 and €45,744: on a €3,000 monthly salary with a €1,500 holiday bonus you get about €79.56 per working day, roughly €1,989 a month. Kela first takes 9.07 % off your wages. Income above €45,744 is replaced at 40 % and above €70,379 at 25 %, so high earners see a much lower replacement rate. The minimum is €31.99 a day. The first 16 working days of parental allowance are paid at a raised rate of up to 90 % of income, and so is the pregnancy allowance (raskausraha) for 40 working days. The allowance is paid for 6 working days a week; each child brings 320 days, 160 for each parent, of which 63 can be transferred to the other. The calculator also totals your own quota: about €13,093 before tax in this example.

Kela looks at 12 calendar months, one month before the leave.

Parental allowance by annual income

The table shows the allowance by gross annual income, meaning salary plus holiday bonus before tax; the calculator applies the 9.07% insurance deduction itself. A month is estimated at 25 working days. Your own quota is 160 days, 16 of them at the raised rate.

The replacement rate falls as income rises. On €30,000 a year the allowance replaces about 64% of pay; on €100,000, only 47%. In gross terms the bends sit at about €50,307 and €77,399 a year.

Kela’s 2026 formula

Parental allowance from annual income, Kela 2026

up to €13,712€31.99
€13,712–€45,7440.7 × income / 300

Kela looks at the previous 12 calendar months, leaving one calendar month between that period and the start of the allowance. Holiday bonus counts as income. In Kela’s own annual income example, €31,125 gives about €66 per working day; the calculator gives €66.04. The formula and limits are on Kela’s annual income and formulas page.

Days and how to share them

  • Pregnancy allowance for 40 working days at the raised rate before the due date.
  • Parental allowance for 320 working days per child, 160 per parent.
  • Transfer: up to 63 working days of your quota to the other parent.
  • Paid days: 6 working days a week, Monday to Saturday.

The calculator ignores self-employed YEL income, on which no insurance deduction is made, and periods when your employer pays salary during leave. Kela decides from Incomes Register data; more on Kela’s parental leave page. Frequently asked questions

How much parental allowance will I get in Finland on €3,000 a month?

With a €1,500 holiday bonus your annual income is €37,500, or €34,099 after the insurance deduction. The allowance is 70 % × €34,099 / 300 = €79.56 per working day, and €102.30 for the first 16 days. That is about €1,989 a month before tax, counting roughly 25 working days a month.

What is the minimum Kela parental allowance in 2026?

€31.99 per working day. You get it if your annual income after the insurance deduction is at most €13,712, or if you have no income at all, for example as a student. In gross salary terms the limit is about €15,080 a year. The raised allowance has the same minimum when annual income is at most €10,664.

Why is my first parental allowance payment higher?

The first 16 working days of parental allowance are paid at a raised rate of up to 90 % of annual income divided by 300. Pregnancy allowance uses the same raised rate for 40 working days. On a €3,000 salary the raised rate is €102.30 a day against €79.56 afterwards, so the first payment can be noticeably larger.

How many parental leave days does each parent get in Finland?

Each child gives 320 working days of parental allowance, with 160 days in each parent’s own quota. You can transfer up to 63 working days of your quota to the other parent. Working days run Monday to Saturday, so 160 days is about 27 weeks. The 40 days of pregnancy allowance come on top.

Is the Finnish parental allowance taxed?

Yes, it is taxable income and Kela withholds tax according to your tax card. No pension or unemployment insurance contribution is taken from a benefit, but the health care contribution is 1.49 %. If you received €1,989 a month for a full year, your rate in Helsinki would be about 20.0%. Your real tax depends on your salary in the same year.
